Confidence isn’t the absence of insecurity; it’s the ability to move forward despite it: Florian Hurel

Mumbai: Having worked with some of Bollywood’s biggest stars, including Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Katrina Kaif, Anushka Sharma, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Nayanthara, celebrity hairstylist Florian Hurel has spent years helping public figures look camera-ready. But behind the glamour, he says, he’s discovered a truth that has little to do with fame and everything to do with being human.

“More times than I can count. Some of the most recognizable faces I’ve worked with have moments of vulnerability just before stepping in front of a camera or onto a stage,” he said.

Those moments have shaped his understanding of confidence itself. “Confidence isn’t the absence of insecurity; it’s the ability to move forward despite it,” he said.

According to Florian, fame, beauty, and success don’t erase self-doubt, they simply make it less visible. “That’s been one of the most humbling lessons of my career. Fame, success, or beauty don’t eliminate self-doubt. They simply make people better at hiding it. Behind every confident public image is still a human being looking for reassurance from time to time,” he said.

He also says that when clients walk into his salon asking for a celebrity-inspired hairstyle, they are rarely looking to copy someone’s appearance. “Usually, it’s the feeling they’re after. A hairstyle can certainly enhance someone’s features, but what they’re really hoping to capture is the emotion they associate with that celebrity, confidence, elegance, power, youthfulness, or freedom,” he said.

Instead of recreating a look, he focuses on adapting the inspiration to suit the individual sitting in his chair. “My job is never to copy someone else exactly. It’s to understand what inspires my client about that look and reinterpret it in a way that complements their own personality, face shape, and lifestyle,” he said.

Ultimately, he believes the best makeovers are the ones that feel authentic. “The best transformations don’t make someone look like a celebrity, they make them look like the best version of themselves,” he said.
Among the many conversations he’s had with clients over the years, one has stayed with him more than most. “One client once told me, ‘I don’t want to look younger. I just want to recognise myself again,'” he said.

That single sentence changed the way he thinks about beauty. “That sentence has stayed with me because it completely changed the way I think about beauty. People aren’t always chasing perfection. They’re often searching for familiarity, confidence, or a version of themselves they feel they’ve lost through stress, illness, motherhood, heartbreak, or simply the passage of time,” he said.

For Florian, hairstyling is often about helping people reconnect with themselves. “As hairstylists, we work with hair, but what we’re often restoring is identity,” he said.
When asked to describe what confidence would look like if it were a hairstyle, Florian’s answer is surprisingly simple. “It wouldn’t have one,” he said.

He believes confidence isn’t defined by a trend or a particular haircut, but by authenticity. “Confidence is the hairstyle that feels effortless because it’s authentically yours. It doesn’t need constant validation or follow every trend. It reflects your personality rather than someone else’s expectations,” he said.

Over the years, he’s seen confidence take many different forms. “I’ve seen confidence in a perfectly polished bob, natural curls, silver hair worn proudly, a bold pixie cut, and long classic waves. The common thread isn’t the hairstyle itself, it’s the person wearing it without apology,” he said.

For Florian, that’s the true measure of a successful transformation. “When someone leaves the chair standing a little taller and smiling without looking for reassurance, that’s what confidence looks like,” he said.
